The Basics

Does the Royal Palace Tuk Tuk Tour Actually Include the Royal Palace?

Yes. The Royal Palace is the opening landmark on all six TukTuk Tour Madrid itineraries, even the shortest, 60-minute Classic tour. What changes as tour length increases isn't whether the palace is included, but how much of the rest of historic Madrid you see around it.

One distinction matters more than tour length: a tuk tuk tour is exterior sightseeing. Your guide takes you to the best viewpoints and explains the palace's history from outside. It does not include admission to the palace interior — that's a separate ticket, covered below.

Two Different Things

Tuk Tuk Sightseeing vs. Visiting the Palace Interior

These are two different products, and confusing them is the most common source of disappointment for first-time visitors booking either one.

Best forRoyal Palace plus Almudena Cathedral, Plaza Mayor and more in one guided rideTravelers who specifically want to go inside

Choose the tuk tuk if you want the Royal Palace together with Almudena Cathedral, the Arab Wall, Plaza Mayor and other historic Madrid landmarks in one guided ride. Add a palace ticket if you want to walk through the State Rooms and Royal Armoury — standard self-guided admission is €18 per person (€26 with an official guide, reduced tickets €9 for ages 5–16, over-65s and students up to 25). EU and Ibero-American citizens get free walk-up entry Monday–Thursday, 4–6pm in winter (October–March) or 5–7pm in summer (April–September); it's ticket-office only and can't be booked online. Many visitors do both: tuk tuk first for orientation and photos, then a separate palace ticket for the interior.

The Route

What You'll See Around the Royal Palace

Almudena Cathedral

Stands directly beside the palace, one of Europe's youngest cathedrals, completed in 1993, with a striking neoclassical and Gothic Revival façade visible from the tuk tuk.

The Arab Wall (Muralla Árabe)

Dates to the 9th century, when Madrid was a Moorish fortress town called Mayrit. Most visitors walking on their own never find it, but it's a standard stop on every route.

Plaza Mayor and Mercado de San Miguel

A short ride away. Plaza Mayor was the stage for royal celebrations and public life in Habsburg Madrid for over 400 years, while the iron-and-glass San Miguel market has covered the same corner since 1916. See our dedicated Plaza Mayor tuk tuk guide for more on that stop.

Barrio de Las Letras, Retiro and Salamanca

From 90 minutes up, routes extend into the literary quarter where Cervantes and Lope de Vega lived and wrote during Spain's Golden Age. From 2 hours up, they reach Retiro Park and the Salamanca district as well.

Pick the Right Length

Which Royal Palace Tuk Tuk Tour Should You Choose?

If the Royal Palace is your main goal and you're short on time, the 60-minute Classic tour (€89) covers the palace, Almudena Cathedral, and the closest surrounding plazas without adding areas further afield.

For most visitors, the 90-minute Highlights tour (€119) is the strongest match — it's built as a highlights overview of exactly this part of the city, adding Plaza Mayor, La Latina, and the literary quarter around the palace core.

If you have a free afternoon, step up to the 2-hour Essentials tour (€149) to add Retiro Park, Salamanca, and Gran Vía to the same historic core — compare tour lengths on our duration guide if you're deciding between options.

For a full day out, the Royal (3h) and Full Experience (4h) tours are private by default and extend north to the Bernabéu and west to Templo de Debod and Casa de Campo — or for the vehicle exclusively for your group at any length, see our private tuk tuk tour.

Logistics

Meeting Point, Pickup, and Logistics

Tours start near Plaza de la Villa, in the historic Madrid de los Austrias district, a short walk from Plaza Mayor and the palace itself, and easy to reach by metro (Ópera or Sol). Free hotel pickup is available for central Madrid hotels — check availability for your address on our free pickup page before booking.

Each tuk tuk seats up to 4 people. Guides speak English and Spanish, with French also offered — confirm your preferred language when you book. The vehicles are designed with passenger comfort in mind; if you specifically need wheelchair or stroller accommodation, confirm directly before booking, since this can vary by vehicle. Groups larger than 4 need two tuk tuks, or you can ask about our local guide tours for a more in-depth format — contact the team to arrange it.

Can You Go Inside the Royal Palace During the Tuk Tuk Tour?

No. The vehicle stays on public roads and the tour focuses on the palace exterior, with the opportunity to stop outside for photos. If you want to visit the State Rooms, Royal Armoury, or other interior areas, you need to buy a separate admission ticket from Patrimonio Nacional. This means you can combine both experiences: take the tuk tuk tour for a guided view of the palace and historic centre, then visit the palace interior separately with your admission ticket — a practical option is doing the tuk tuk first, so you have an overview before exploring the State Rooms independently afterward.

Worth It?

Is a Royal Palace Tuk Tuk Tour Worth It?

For most visitors, yes — particularly first-timers who want to see the palace together with several other historic landmarks without a full day of walking, and travelers with limited time or mobility. See our full worth-it breakdown, including how it compares to walking and to the hop-on hop-off bus.

If your main interest is spending time inside the palace itself — the State Rooms, Royal Armoury, and royal collections — treat that as a separate activity and book palace admission directly, either before or after your tuk tuk ride.
